Twitter says it has no plans to develop a new version of Tweetie, one of the more popular Mac clients for the microblogging service.
Tweetie was developed by Loren Brichter for both the Mac and Apple’s mobile devices. Brichter then joined Twitter in April of this year with a remit to develop the iPhone and iPod touch version of Tweetie as the official Twitter app. That was released in the summer and followed by a completely redesigned version for the iPad.
Tweetie users hoped that would be followed by a new Mac client, but earlier this week those hopes were dashed by Twitter co-founder Evan Williams.
“Tweetie for Mac is not something we’re actively investing in at this time,” he wrote on his Twitter feed.
Twitter’s Carolyn Penner confirmed the stasis by email.
“We aren’t actively planning Tweetie for Mac 2,” she wrote.
Although Twitter has provided some maintenance updates for the app, it hasn’t added support for newer Twitter features, notably retweets and lists.
Alternative Mac clients include Echofon, Kiwia and Twitterrific.
