Twitter has unveiled the redesign of its website, incorporating elements from its recently released iPad app.
The new layout lists @mentions, retweets, searches, and lists just above your timeline to create a simplified, single view on the left of the screen.
That leaves space on the right to display links within the page — Twitter has partnered with a number of photo sharing, music and video websites so their content can be viewed without leaving twitter.com: DailyBooth, DeviantART, Etsy, Flickr, Justin.TV, Kickstarter, Kiva, Photozou, Plixi, Twitgoo, TwitPic, TwitVid, USTREAM, Vimeo, yfrog and YouTube
Below this new panel are the familiar right-side lists of followers and followees, favourites and trending topics.
Additional enhancements include a related content pane, showing additional information related to the author or subject, such as replies, other tweets by that user or a map of where a geotagged tweet was sent from. And clicking a username will now display a mini profile.
Evan Williams, Twitter chief executive, said the aim of the redesign is to provide an “easier, faster and richer experience” that gets more from a tweet’s 140 characters.
“Twitter has always been about getting a lot in a little. The constraint of 140 characters drives conciseness and lets you quickly discover and share what’s happening. Yet, we’ve learned something since starting Twitter—life doesn’t always fit into 140 characters or less.”
Twitter will gradually roll out a preview of the redesign over the coming weeks. Users will be able to switch between both old and new views during the preview period.
