Apple has removed text on its UK website which said that the iOS 4.1 update for iPhone and iPod touch would be released on Wednesday, 8 September.
The date was replaced with the words “Coming soon” but developers who have received beta versions of the update have reported that the most recent beta is “gold master”.
While the update does deliver a handful of new features — notably an HDR option for the iPhone 4 camera and access to Apple’s new social gaming service, Game Center — it is the bug fixes that will provide the most significant enhancements.
Apple has fixed support for the iPhone 3G, addressed issues with the proximity sensor responsible for disabling the screen while an iPhone is held close to the face, and tweaked Bluetooth capabilities.
iOS 4.1 will provide full AVRCP, enabling comprehensive audio controls via Bluetooth such as skipping forward, back and volume. Currently only volume controls are supported by in-car systems and other Bluetooth interfaces.
The update will also deliver FaceTime video calling for the new iPod touch, using email addresses as the point of contact.
