AppleCare adds free Tech Tool

by Simon Aughton on September 6, 2010

Apple has added a free disk diagnostic and recovery utility to AppleCare, its extended warranty programme.

Micromat’s TechTool Deluxe allows you to test a Mac’s critical system components, such as the processor, RAM (memory), VRAM (video memory) and the hard disk. It can also repair your computer’s disk structure and rebuild its directories as necessary.

The software is only available with an AppleCare Protection Plan, which provides telephone technical support and hardware repair coverage to three years from your Mac’s date of purchase.

Tech Tool Deluxe is available with an AppleCare Protection Plan serial number from support.apple.com/kb/DL1005.

UPDATE: Apple has been supplying Tech Tool to AppleCare customers for a number of years, but this is the first time it has been made available as a download.
