Apple sets date for iOS unification

by Simon Aughton on September 2, 2010

Apple has confirmed that it will deliver multitasking for the iPad in November with the release of iOS 4.2.

The release will bring the iPad into line with the iPhone and iPod touch, and in addition to multitasking will provide iPad users with other iOS 4 features such as app folders.

It will also provide all iOS devices with support for wireless printing, presumably via either a Wi-Fi–enabled printer, or printer shared from a Mac, Time Capsule or AirPort base station.

Apple is also extending the capabilities of its AirTunes technology. Renamend AirPlay, it will allow you to stream video as well as audio between any suitably equipped devices, for instance from an iPad to one of the new Apple TVs.

Ahead of these changes, Apple will release iOS 4.1, adding HDR shooting to the Camera app and introducing Game Center, the online gaming community it announced earlier this year.

The update will also fix a number of problems, including support for the iPhone 3G.
