Ex-Apple manager “had over $150,000 in shoe boxes”

The former Apple manager charge with taking kickbacks in return for confidential product information had a hoard of cash stashed at home, prosecutors said in court.

Paul Devine is alleged to have received upwards of $1 million in payments from six Asian suppliers of iPhone and iPod components in return for information including projected sales figures, Apple’s production costs and rival companies’ bids, the court was told.

“He had over $150,000 stored in shoe boxes,” plus $20,00 in foreign currency, said Department of Justice Attorney Michelle Kane, before adding that investigators had found “a significant number of accounts overseas and a significant amount of money”.

Kane also claimed that Paul Devine told the court that Devine should not be released on bail until that money had been moved to the US.

US Magistrate Judge Howard Lloyd agreed, ordering Device to transfer the overseas money to the US and post bail of $600,000. Devine must also provide access to two safe deposit boxes and surrender his and his wife’s passports.

Devine, who also faces a civil lawsuit from Apple, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
