Apple patches OS X security flaws

by Simon Aughton on August 25, 2010

Apple has released a security update to address various vulnerabilities in OS X 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard.

The flaws affect eight areas of the OS and can variously lead to unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution or allow an attacker to gain access to user credentials and other sensitive information.

Security Update 2010-005 is available for Mac OS X v10.5.8, Mac OS X Server v10.5.8, Mac OS X v10.6.4, Mac OS X Server v10.6.4 via Software Update or from support.apple.com/downloads/.

Well, I ran the Software Update and now can’t access my iMac at all. No Finder & no Dock showing on the desktop (posting this on my son’s Macbook). What a bloody disaster. Well done Apple. I’d started getting excited at the thought of Aperture not constantly becoming unresponsive too.

At last! It works. Sort of. Spinning beachball is going to get worn out at this rate, which might be a good thing if it means it goes away for good. Somehow I doubt it will happen

Spoke too soon. Five hard re-starts later (yes, 5), I finally get into the system again. What a mess. Apple, that Microsoft engineer you employed – put them in charge of the tea trolley. DO NOT let them loose on software ever again.

Hmmm, I installed the update via ‘Software Update’ onto my MacPro and MacBookPro and have had no problems at all… But then I did, as I always do before an update or upgrade, a Repair Disk (even if it doesn’t need it), a Repair Permissions and a Restart, then I update… The only problem with any update I have ever had from Apple was the one that stuffed the DVD drive in the MacBookPro way back when…
