Foxconn hires closer to home

by Simon Aughton on August 19, 2010

Apple’s main manufacturing contractor in China has announced that it is hiring 400,000 workers for new plants located closer to residential areas.

Foxconn is hoping that by locating closer to workers’ homes, they will eliminate one of the problems that is thought to have been behind the spate of suicides at its main, Shenzhen facility.

Around 170,000 Shenzhen employees will be moved to the new plants.

The company counts many major computer and consumer electronics firms amongst its clients, including Apple, HP and Dell. It recently reported a 50% rise in profits and the additional hires will increase its workforce to more than 1.2 million.
