Apple preps “major change” for online support

by Simon Aughton on August 17, 2010

Apple has revealed that it is planning a “major upgrade” to its online support forum.

Apple Discussions will be replaced by a Apple Support Communities, which the company says will “bring together thousands of Macintosh, iPod, iPhone, and iPad users from around the world to discuss Apple products and topics”. Much like Apple Discussions does at the moment.

In fact, Apple’s announcement gives few clues as to the difference between the old forums and the new Communities.

The key difference would appear to be a new homepage, gathering all Apple’s online support resources into a single, customisable space. Users will be able to “browse or search our product Communities, ask or answer a question, and get answers from other Apple users like you. Home is where you create your Profile, personalise your Homepage, and customise Your View.”

Apple hasn’t said when the changes will be implemented. In the meantime, check out MacUser’s new forums.

What’s happened to the support communities? I can’t access my account at the moment. A message comes up saying there is an access issue, and that I should post my message. I’ve posted 4 messages over the last fortnight, and have received no reply. Thus, a very useful resource for trouble-shooting is no longer available to me.

And they want me to entrust all my data to iCloud? They must be joking!
