An overheating iPod brought a Tokyo commuter train to an unexpected during the Friday morning rush hour after passengers complained of a strong burning smell.
The train was stopped for several minutes while engineers investigated the cause of the smell, said a spokesman for the rail line operator, Tokyu Corp.
“When a member of staff went to investigate inside the train, a passenger came over showing him that the iPod she was listening to had burst apart,” a spokesman said. He added that there were no reports of injuries.
Apple Japan had no immediate comment.
But the train incident occurred just days after Apple Japan had agreed to replace first-generation iPod nanos, followed around 60 reported incidents of overheating, four causing minor burns.
Apple blames the problem on a single battery supplier which it has declined to identify.
The Tokyu spokesman would not reveal the iPod model that caused the train’s delay.
