Jailbreakers crack iPhone 4

by Simon Aughton on August 2, 2010

The iPhone Dev Team has published details of its first jailbreak for the iPhone 4, enabling users to run apps from sources other than the App Store and connect to unsupported mobile networks.

The jailbreak works by exploiting a security vulnerability in mobile Safari, so all you have to do is point the browser at the relevant website to begin the unlocking process.

Apple recently failed in its bid to make jailbreaking illegal, but warns that unlocking an iPhone in this way will void the warranty. It will also mean that you cannot install any software or security updates and there are some reports that this latest jailbreak has fatally “bricked” some handsets, leaving them inoperable.

Key features may also go missing. Some early jailbreakers can no longer make the FaceTime video calls, others of broken Wi-Fi.

The iPhone Dev Team says that the latest jailbreak “doesn’t slow down your device or use any extra battery, and is fully reversible (just restore in iTunes).”
