Apple sues over “inferior” iAccessories

by Simon Aughton on August 2, 2010

Apple has filed a lawsuit against several firms that it says are selling unauthorised accessories for iPods, iPhones and iPads.

The company alleges that the products — which include chargers, speakers and cables — violate as many as 10 patents and trademarks and may damage the devices to which they are connected.

“Many are of inferior quality and reliability, raising significant concerns over compatibility with and damages to Apple’s products,” the court filing says.

Apple licenses its proprietary dock connector through the MFi programme and while it does ensure that products are fully compatible it also means that accessory makers must pay a royalty to Apple.

Apple has named six US companies in the lawsuit and says it could add another 20. None of the accused have made any comment.
