Amazon has unveiled two new Kindle ebook readers ahead of the launch of a UK-based ebook store next month.
The Kindle has a new, clearer e-ink six-inch display tucked into a body that is 21% smaller than before and, at 250g, 15% lighter and, Amazon says, last one month on a single charge with wireless disabled.
For the first time both models have Wi-Fi for downloading books, magazines and blogs. Previously that was only possible over 3G, which is now restricted to just one model.
Amazon has also introduced “crisper, darker fonts”, doubled the storage to hold 3,500 books, and added a WebKit-based web browser, albeit one it describes as “experimental”.
The new Kindles will start shipping on 27 August, the same day that Amazon will open its UK ebook store with more than 400,000 titles.
Kindle Wi-Fi costs £109; the 3G model is £149 and includes a completely free 3G connection (Amazon covers the cost through ebook sales).
“Kindle is the best-selling product on Amazon for two years running. We lowered the price and sales growth tripled,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com chief executive. “At this price point, many people are going to buy multiple units for the home and family.”
Amazon has not said how many Kindles it has sold to date but did reveal this week that Stieg Larsson, author of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, became the first writer to sell more than one million Kindle ebooks.
