Apple adds inertia to MacBooks, closes Cinemas

by Simon Aughton on July 28, 2010

Apple has released a software update that both adds support for the new Magic Trackpad and provides scrolling and gesture enhancements for numerous MacBook models.

The update also installs a Trackpad System Preferences pane for configuring Magic Trackpad, which requires an Intel-based desktop Mac running OS X 10.6.4.

On laptops, the update provides support for the three-finger drag gestures and inertial scrolling, which mimics the scroll behaviour on iOS devices.

Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0 will only appear in Software Update on desktop Macs after installing the new trackpad; it’s already available for laptop users.

A senior Apple executive has confirmed that the new 27-inch Cinema Display will be the only external display available from the company once it goes on sale in September. David Moody, vice president of hardware marketing, said that the 24- and 30-inch models will only be available until supplies run out.
