Apple unveils Magic Trackpad and Battery Charger

by Simon Aughton on July 27, 2010

Apple has unveiled the first ever trackpad for Mac desktops, together with a battery charger to accompany its growing portfolio of AA-dependent devices.

The Magic Trackpad brings the Multi-Touch gestures of Mac notebook trackpads to the desktop. With its glass surface, the wireless Magic Trackpad allows users to scroll smoothly up and down a page with inertial scrolling, pinch to zoom in and out, rotate an image with their fingertips and swipe three fingers to flip through a collection of web pages or photos.

The Magic Trackpad can be configured to support single button or two button commands and supports tap-to-click as well as a physical click.

The Apple Battery Charger is designed not only to charge AA batteries — of which six are included — but also to reduce power consumption when not in use.

Apple claims that has the lowest standby power usage of any similar charger on the market; as much as 90% lower in fact.

The Magic Trackpad costs £59; the Apple Battery Charger is £25.

I will be interested to see how well the Track Pad does in real life. I have a Bamboo tablet (which is relatively small), and use it little – purely because it takes up too much room on my desk. The mouse takes up little desk space.
Trying to find the Track Pad under a clutter of files & papers is likely to be a pain. Trying to use it alongside said files and papers is also likely to be difficult.
It sounds interesting, but I suspect the ergonomics will mean it is low down the pecking order in usability. On that basis the price looks high.
