iMac shortage; Covent Garden Apple; Bumper app

by Simon Aughton on July 26, 2010

Some Apple stores are no longer stocking the iMac, hinting that new models of the all-in-one desktop may be in the offing.

AppleInsider reports that several US stores are no longer able to fulfil “Reserve and Pick Up” orders, though the company’s online stores are still quoting 24-hour delivery times.

The iMac range was last updated in October 2009, with faster Intel processors and souped-up graphics.

AppleInsider adds that the Mac Pro is also in short supply. Apple’s pro desktop is significantly longer in the tooth than any other of its computer products — the last update took place in March 2009.

When new machines do go on sale, they will doubtless by a lead attraction at Apple’s store in London’s Covent Garden. Work on the historic site at the corner of the Covent Garden Piazza has taken around two years in typical secrecy, but ifoAppleStore has just secured a single pic of the restored interior showing some of the furniture in situ. The site says its sources indicate that the store will open this weekend.

The store will be selling all manner of accessories for Macs, iPods, iPad and iPhone, including Apple’s Bumper case for iPhone 4.

Apple announced a week or so ago that existing iPhone 4 customers can get a free Bumper — or a refund if they’ve already bought one — as a response to the overblown foofaraw surrounding the antenna “death grip”.

Applying couldn’t be simpler — simply install the free iPhone 4 Case Program app, free from the App Store.

Apple continues to add videos of other phones’ death grips to its antenna performance webpage. The latest is Motorola’s Android-based Droid X, which joins handsets from RIM BlackBerry, HTC, Nokia, Samsung and, of course, Apple.

Apple is currently suggesting a 3-5 week delivery time on the bumpers (there are a number on offer). Ordered mine on Friday, got the delivery note on Sunday and should have it mid week apparently… hopefully before I head off to IOW.
