iPad screen maker says it can’t keep up

by Simon Aughton on July 23, 2010

LG Display says it will not meet demand from Apple for the screen panels used in the iPad until next year.

Kwon Young-soo, chief executive of the South Korean firm, acknowledged that the shortage of panels is a major reason why Apple is asking customers to wait up to 10 days for delivery of the tablet.

And he said that other companies hoping to introduce tablets later this year may also suffer screen shortages over the nest nine to 12 months.

“Apple is ordering more and more displays but it isn’t something we can be able to respond quickly,” Kwon told the Wall Street Journal. “I am not sure whether we can be able to meet orders from other companies for similar products, but we will be able to supply the displays without fail by the second quarter of next year.”

The Journal adds that other iPad component makes have recently ramped up production to meet demand.
