These portable, stylish speakers are from JBL, part of the same company that owns the well-respected Harman Kardon brand, which provided the speakers for the iMac G3 and G4. The On Tour speakers can be used with any device with a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. While the On Tour system's small size lends itself to use on the go, there's no reason why it can't be connected to a computer to replace the low-powered and tinny-sounding speakers found in both laptops and desktops. It comes supplied with a mains adaptor, but can also be powered from four AAA batteries. We got several days' of moderate use at normal volume when powered from a set of disposable batteries, although JBL suggests you use rechargeable ones. Two sliver buttons allow you to adjust the volume easily, and tapping both at once mutes the sound. A slightly cryptic system of two coloured LEDs indicate power status, and a lightweight pouch provides scratch protection when you're out and about. The 6W total output provides plenty of volume - more than enough to have heads turning in the MacUser offices, although that could have been more to do with the choice of 'testing' music. Sound output is impressive for a set of portable speakers. It doesn't provide enough bass to be used as a primary audio output, but the sound is surprisingly rich for such small drivers. There's plenty of detail in the mid-range, and treble is beautifully clean and clear. There was only very slight distortion at the highest volume. If you're looking for a set of flexible, compact speakers to hook up to your personal stereo in the park, give your next presentation a little more kick, or give your laptop's audio a boost, the JBL On Tour is an eye-catching, ear-pleasing solution. We do take issue with its price, though - £70 is more than we think is fair for these speakers. Although it may lack the design flair of the On Tour, consider Creative's £50 TravelSound speaker system if your budget is severely tight. By Christopher Phin
