O2: iPhone announcement in the "coming weeks" 8:41AM, Thursday 15th May 2008
O2 has told reporters to expect a joint announcement with Apple in the "coming weeks", adding to the speculation about an imminent release of a 3G iPhone.

Matthew Key, chief executive of Telefonica O2 Europe, made the announcement during a conference call after his group's results, but declined to say whether it would be about 3G iPhones.

The mobile operator O2 has exclusive right to carry the iPhone in the UK and Ireland and last month sold out after cutting the price of the 8GB version by £100 pounds in the UK market. Analysts interpreted this as a bid to clear shelf space ahead of what is expected to be the launch of a new model that will run on faster 3G networks.

Apple has also subsequently sold out of both the 8GB and 16GB models. It declined to add to Key's remarks.
