Perian peps up Mac video 1:12PM, Friday 8th February 2008
The Perian Project has released a new version of its "swiss army knife for QuickTime", a collection of codecs that enables QuickTime to play numerous video formats that are otherwise not supported.

While Perian 1.1 adds no new codecs, it does promise major performance improvements; TrueAudio, MP1, and DTS audio support; a lice-based multithreaded decoding for MPEG-1/2/H.264 and Apple H.264 handling of AVCHD/interlaced video. Better subtitle and snow support are also included.

And there are compatibility fixes for QuickTime 7.4 and Leopard.

Perian 1.1 is a free download from perian.org.

There are reports that in some instance Perian can distort some video, so it should be approached with care. But since it is installed as a preference pane that is easily uninstalled, and should you come across some video that your Mac cannot play, Perian usually has the solution.
