Global TV comes to the Mac 1:05PM, Monday 19th February 2007
We could be just days away from the launch of Apple TV, but already there is competition on the horizon. Joost, the peer to peer TV platform from the brains behind Skype and Kazaa has opened for beta registration on the Mac and other platforms.

Described by the developers as 'a new way of watching TV on the Internet', it is built around the familiar model of channels, programmes and adverts, but builds in MySpace-like social networking features, chat and other as yet undisclosed elements.

Currently, Joost's 'channels' are simply video playlists,

rather than scheduled programme streams, and so start as soon as they are launched, and once played through in their entirety will loop back to the beginning. Changing channel and then switching back again will send you back to the start of the stream. This is set to change in later builds of the system, so that they act more like a conventional terrestrial or satellite broadcaster.

A Mac-native build of the client software, which requires a broadband connection for the best experience, has been distributed to 250 users, although it is not yet widely available in the Beta programme. The timescale for making this available to more users will be determined 'depending on the feedback' received, although it is said to be 'very soon'.

To apply for a place on the beta programme, sign up at the Joost site.
